Since the mid 1800’s we could find ”Tritonbrunnen” (The Triton Well) here at the square. In 1944 the city announced a sculpture competition to decorate the square, preferably with a fountain, which should reflect Skövdes history. Ivar Johansson’s proposal won: the sower scatters the grains with the spirit of the earth hovering at his side. The young man, ready to sit up on the horse, eagerly looking towards the future. The old, who caringly extends its arms around the new sprout, which is green on the old cracked trunk. The violence, that with his whip and heavy cloak sweeps the earth and mankind who tries to protect herself from the storm with her arms over her head.
“Livets Brunn” (The well of Life) is marked by its time. In 1944 the Second World War was upon us, and that the symbol of violence in the shape of a soldier should be in the sculpture was seen as obvious. The Triton Well was reinstalled in 1981 at Eric Ugglas Square.
