Helge Johansson was one of the artists who, in 1944, competed for the decoration of Hertig Johan’s Square. The winner was Ivar Johnsson with “The well of Life”, but Helge Johansson’s “Gyllen” came in second place and was instead ordered for the church park. He wanted the piece to reflect Skövde’s history; on the top we find “Vestergyllen” (a poetic name for Västergötland) while the sides of the fundament represent different epochs in Skövde. Here we find S:ta Elin (Helena), The Timboholm Treasure, Duke Johan’s town privileges, the city fire in 1759, Skövde garrison town and the local business community.
