During the past 50 years Skövde has changed a lot, and this becomes very clear when you look at old photographs – sometimes it even feels as if you are in an entirely different city! A town has to change to develop, and sometimes that means that some buildings must be torn down to leave space for new ones. When it comes to Skövde, after working with this series and looking at an infinite number of old pictures, I think that way too many houses were allowed to decay and become a victim for the excavators.

When you’re standing on Hertig Johans Square and look to the north you will see a large magnificent stone building, the so called “Landinska Huset” that was built between 1882 and 1884. It was very modern for its time, and on the top two floors there were luxurious five-room apartments.
Earlier the Lundin’s Tavern was situated in the same spot, in a house built in the 1700’s. The picture is taken 1882, the same year as the tavern was demolished.
Sven “Petter” Pettersson-Helén, who lived in Heléns Cabin, used to go to the tavern. Petter had a pet ram that followed him everywhere, and it is said that the ram had to wait outside during Petter’s pub visits.
