Skövde förr och nu
Locations
Info

During the past 50 years Skövde has changed a lot, and this becomes very clear when you look at old photographs – sometimes it even feels as if you are in an entirely different city! A town has to change to develop, and sometimes that means that some buildings must be torn down to leave space for new ones. When it comes to Skövde, after working with this series and looking at an infinite number of old pictures, I think that way too many houses were allowed to decay and become a victim for the excavators.

The small house next to Sandtorget has had several functions over the years. It was built in 1863 as a fire station for the voluntary fire brigade, and in 1896 it received a high tower which was used for drying the fire hoses. In 1931 the house was rebuilt into a fish hall, and the tower was removed. From the beginning the house had three gates towards the square, but two were later made into windows. From 1976 to 2018 Skövde Tourist Office was located in the building. From 2019 you can buy locally produced delicacies from the small food hall “Den lilla Saluhallen” here. The exterior is still very similar to its original appearance from the 1800’s.
