The investment in a cultural center in the neighborhood Oden begins with a council decision in 1954; to make a plot available for the Peoples Hall Association. In 1962 it was decided that a theatre building was to be erected next to the people’s hall. The building would also include the city library, art gallery and assembly halls (today we also find the art museum, a movie theatre and a restaurant in the building). The Cultural Center is the first of its kind in Sweden, designed by Hans-Erland Heineman. It was inaugurated on Novemver 7th 1964. Characteristics of the building includes the slightly inclined outer walls that, together with different forms of brick design, gives the building a sculptural appearance. This impression is reinforced by the ornaments that often emerge only at close range, for example “The Sign of Life”; a ceramic plate that recurs in several places in the façade. The artistic decoration has gradually been extended with works by several renowned artists. The buildings have later undergone some alterations, but since the same architectural office has been dealing with both the new construction in the 1960’s as well as later measures, the transformations that have been made has been well integrated into the architectural as a whole.
