Hotel Billingen was built on initiative by a group of members of the city council in the 1880’s. They considered that the new railway city needed a both modern and centrally situated hotel, with a contemporary entertainment venue. The building was erected in 1887-1888 after drawings by architect Lars Kellman, and with Sköfde Hotellbyggnads Aktiebolag as the project contractor. The hotel was built with both a dining room, a Swiss café and a billiard room on the ground floor. On the floor above there was a large banquet hall. The hotel was given a prominent position in the cityscape, situated opposite the railway station, and was designed with a magnificent stucco architecture that was typical for the 1880’s. Hotel Billingen is among the best preserved and most architecturally interesting of the many hotel buildings built around Sweden in the late 1800’s. The hotel is protected as a historic building since 1985.
