The city’s old town hall was burnt to ashes by the great fire in 1759. The parliament of Sweden 1762 granted Skövde a contribution to the construction of a new Town Hall made out of stone. After the donations of voluntary doners the builder Sven Westman was contracted to construct the new two story building in 1775-1776. The city’s two bells hung in a small tower on the roof. The building contained both the council hall on the top floor, scale house and a jail, and in the northern part even a school. When a new schoolhouse was built in 1853 the town hall underwent a major reconstruction. The reconstruction was carried out according to plans by Lt. Hjalmar Wijnbladh. The top floor was raised slightly, but the big difference was the original square façade. The clock tower was moved to the new front, and the short sides were decorated with stepped gables. The old function with the mayor and council was maintained until 1938. The old Town Hall is today Skövdes oldest secular building made out of stone.
